This paper is a continuation of the paper comparing designs per ACI 307-88 and the CICIND Model Code (CR-039). A similar format is used, a number of typical chimneys designed per ACI 307-95 being analysed to determine the appropriate ultimate wind load factor, if the proposed Eurocode were used. If this ultimate wind load factor exceeds 1.5, the design would be deemed to satisfy the Eurocode.
Of the 10 chimneys examined, all more than satisfied the Eurocode, with ultimate wind load factors varying between 1.61 and 1.96. It follows that chimneys designed per the proposed Eurocode will not usually satisfy ACI 307-95 with regard to vertical reinforcement. With regard to horizontal reinforcement, the ACI rules appear to require insufficient steel to prevent significant vertical cracks developing.
