Since the start of Eurocode preparation, national European governments are not permitted to modify codes. Unfortunately, the existing French chimney code (Circa 1971) is based upon outdated principles and cannot be used. EDF therefore had to develop its own code for the design of this new chimney, 220m tall, downstream of an FGD unit and equipped with four steel liners, each lined with vinylester resin with glass flakes. The new code is limit state, taking account of feed-back from EDF's experience with large cooling towers. Load factor for wind is 1.75 x 1.2x "Normal" wind per NV65-67 and for dead load, either 0.9 or 1.35. Material safety factors are 1.875 for concrete and 1.15 for reinforcement for all but accidental loads.
