Calculation of chimney vibrations by transfer matrix methods

Jalil

CICIND REPORT Vol. 12, No. 1, 1996

Order No: CR-043

The paper describes the transfer matrix method, which uses a mixed form of the element force-displacement relationships and transfers the structural behaviour parameters (the joint forces and displacements), from one end of the structure to the other. Its advantage is that is that it produces a system of equations to be solved that are small in comparison with those produced by the more common stiffness method. The large number of small matrices that are required introduces some inaccuracies, but this is relatively unimportant in most cases. An example is included of the fundamental vibration frequency of a chimney 198m tall.
