Experience of various lining materials and metals in an FGD pilot plant

F. Uliana, M. Poli and P.V. Scolari

CICIND REPORT Vol. 12, No. 1, 1996

Order No: CR-084

The paper describes a test programme conducted by ENEL and Mariani Battista on various lining materials in ducting downstream of a pilot FGD plant. Gas conditions were adjusted to model closely those to be expected in the true-life ducting and chimney serving a power station equipped with FGD. Tests involved observing the long-term performance of various lining materials in the various conditions to be found in the different locations in the test rig. The lining materials tested included glass flake vinylesters, fluoelastomers, TSL, GRP, borosilicate glass, titanium, carbon steel and various alloys, such as AISI 316L, Hastelloy, Nicrofer and Cronifer. The various types of metallic corrosion are explained in simple terms. As a result of these tests, ENEL chose to use a high nickel alloy, using the "Wall-papering" technique.
