New automatic device for cleaning the insides of chimneys

Lose Esparta Asteinza, Carlos Gonzales Flores.

CICIND REPORT Vol. 15, No. 1, 1999

Order No: CR-170

Environmental regulations are increasingly more demanding with regard to the care that companies must take in order to reduce their contaminant emissions. Ash emissions increase with more frequent and faster power station start ups because they tend to dislodge ash that may have accumulated during normal operation. To minimise this it is necessary to clean the inside of the flue and the time taken can severely disrupt operations.   This paper describes a device that uses a robotised system of dry cleaning to sweep the ash off the surface.  On a test run it completed the cleaning of a chimney in two days that would have taken a month to do manually.
