This paper uses a numerical study of the seismic response of chimneys to compare behaviour with that predicted by the design provisions of EC8. The study was based on four real earthquake situations applied to a range of chimney heights. It is concluded that imposing controlled plasticity at the lowest practical level is generally not effective regarding moment reduction over the height. Also assigning sectional capacities over the height leads to uncontrolled plasticity, however with acceptable ductility demands. Behaviour in this case is critically dependent on the assumed damping ratio of 5%. Taken together these suggest that further consideration is desirable before the Eurocode is implemented.
