General industrial chimneys are built for long-term operation and use. The layout of the chimneys is done after consideration of the different operating conditions of the plant. Acid resistant materials of different qualities are needed to achieve satisfactory operation.
The first part of the paper describes the conditions that give rise to acid in the chimney and some of the design considerations that must be dealt with in design. Five key regions of possible acid attack are identified, inside and outside the chimney shell, and the classic solutions to the problem are discussed.
The second part of the paper deals with developments in protective coatings to resist the acid attack on concrete chimneys. Surface protection systems using epoxy resins and polyurethane resins are described.
