This paper describes how decommissioned reinforced concrete chimneys can be given
a 'second life' by using them as the base for mounting a wind turbine. The advantage to this approach is said to be that
it enables the turbine rotor to be at a greater height and, since wind speed increases
with height and power generated goes with the cube of wind speed, this greatly increases
energy capture. The paper describes how an existing RC chimney could be modified to act as
the base for a standard steel wind turbine tower- including demolition of the top-most
section of the chimney. The approach has been demonstrated in a pilot project in Germany.
