This paper describes a full-scale experiment to measure the temperature distribution around the circumference of a chimney using Infra Red thermometers. These instruments are capable of collecting the reflected, emitted and transmitted thermal energy. The emissivity of the chosen surface can be compensated for in the instrument or the collected data. The temperature differentials identified throughout the day were significant and, it was estimated, could lead to tip deflections of up to 0.2%H.
