chimneys

This
presentation builds on the work described to our Chicago meeting in May 1999.
Results are presented for recent experimental work indicating that
reinforced concrete chimneys possess some ductility when subject to cyclic load.
This ductility arises from yielding of the reinforcement. Based on these tests
an inelastic procedure has been established for assessing the performance of RC
chimneys subject to severe earthquake ground shaking.
The procedure has been used to analyse a number of chimneys, develop
design recommendations and establish appropriate ductility factors.
A 245m high chimney designed using the proposed rules is compared on a
cost a performance basis with designs carried out according to existing
international codes of practice.
These suggest that cost savings in the order of 20% may be achievable.
