Order No: CR-196
Turkey suffered two serious earthquakes in 1999 - Marmara in August and Bolu
in November. The paper describes the situation of Turkey with regard to the
Arabian Plate and its history of major earthquakes. The two recent quakes had a magnitude of 7.8 and 7.3, putting
them well into the worst ones this century.
Loss of life exceeded 20,000, with another 45,000 injured.
The paper goes on to review the performance of particular chimneys, some
of which collapsed. It also compares the new Turkish Code with its predecessor.
