The dismantling of unused reinforced concrete chimneys and their use for wind turbines

Bendix H.

CICIND REPORT Vol. 18, No. 1, 2002

Order No: CR-225

This paper describes two methods for dismantling concrete chimneys. The first uses a mini-digger that is pulled up the chimney initially and then is clamped to the walls. It demolishes the sections of wall between its supporting feet and then is moved down the chimney on to secondary feet so that it can then demolish the newly exposed upper parts.  This method has been successfully used in Germany . The second method described was developed by the author, and comprises a self-climbing hoist an annular hydraulic saws to cut through the upper sections of the chimney.  An example of its use is presented.
