The relationship between
stresses and strains play an important role in the design of a structure.
Concrete is known, when subject to sustained loading, to reveal growing strain
– a phenomenon known as ‘creep’. These can, in time, result in strains
much greater than those that existed when the load was first applied.
Complicating this for concrete is the shrinkage of the concrete members
due to drying out. The net effect is
the gradual transfer of load from the concrete to the reinforcement.
This paper seeks to examine the how the stresses in are redistributed in
tall, reinforced concrete chimneys.
