This paper presents the results of the analysis of normal stresses in chimney shafts weakened by damage and imperfections. The detailed considerations focus on the most commonly encountered defects and damage such as badly cast construction joints, poor quality of concrete, corrosion of reinforcing bars and concrete, reduction in section area due to replacement of weak or loose areas during repair work. The stresses in the steel and concrete are determined numerically using both linear and non-linear approaches and results are presented in the form of plots.
